Countryside Manager - Sheffield

Summary

We have a rare opportunity in the High Peak for a Countryside Manager to lead our countryside team and conservation management - and to shape our vision to deliver for the nature and climate crisis.

We have a plan in place that will drive us to deliver significant woodland creation across the High Peak, focus on rolling out more peatland restoration at an accelerated scale and pace, and work in partnership with our tenants to shape farm businesses that will help deliver our vision. The Peak District portfolio is one the key National Trust landscapes that will help deliver on our organisation’s nature and carbon strategy - the opportunities to make things happen are huge!

This role is fixed term for 2 years but there is a strong possibility it will be made permanent. Salary range depending on experience (£38K - £41K). Please apply by attaching a CV and cover letter.

What it's like to work here

You'll lead a team of c12 staff from our Edale base including Rangers and a Countryside Engagement Officer. You'll have strong links with the project-based team who'll be leading the large-scale restoration work. You'll work with a range of internal and external consultants with a wide range of specialisms – providing significant development opportunities that help grow your knowledge and confidence in the countryside sector.

You'll be part of a team of countryside professionals including the Lead Ranger in the White Peak, Lead Ranger at Longshaw and a Site Manager delivering a RSPB/NT partnership in the Eastern Moors.

The High Peak must be one of the most amazing places to work in with 13,000ha of moorland and in-bye with special places such as Mam Tor and Kinder Scout https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kinder-edale-and-the-high-peak

What you'll be doing

As the Countryside Manager you'll lead your team to deliver the High Peak Vision. It's a challenging role as we go through a process of change to ensure the landscape is resilient to the impacts of climate change and able to help respond to the nature crisis. You’ll work at a strategic level to lead and deliver our plans to enhance the landscape, whilst balancing this with increasing demand from our supporters to access and enjoy the outdoors.

Your team will play a leading role in managing and improving access, delivering conservation projects and engaging with our visitors outdoors. Given the changes to how people use the outdoors you'll review how your team operates to ensure we are best placed to engage. A key aspect of the role will be to work in partnership with a range of organisations – we cannot do everything ourselves and if we are to work at a fast pace, we must collaborate with others.
