Gardener - Wolverhampton

Summary

Do you have gardening and horticultural experience and are looking for a new challenge on a part time basis?

You'll be the only Gardener here supervising a team of volunteers; you'll need to be able to prioritise work and make decisions about the activities and tasks needing to be completed in the garden.

This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year.

What it's like to work here

Moseley Old Hall is an Elizabethan farmhouse that has been under the care of the Trust for 60 years this year. The gardens are small and are in a 17th Century design, including formal gardens, knot garden and heritage orchard as well as meadows and woodland within our wider outdoor space.
We are a small property expecting to welcome over 42,000 visitors through our doors this year. We are a friendly, welcoming team and with plans to develop the site further incorporating additional land, which will double our current size over the coming years. As we are on the outskirts of Wolverhampton we are also working to build closer relationships and community links within the local area.

What you'll be doing

As the only Gardener; you’ll take ownership of the garden ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy. You'll need to prioritise the work that needs completing in the gardens and plan your time effectively. You'll work closely with the Ranger supporting each other to carry out work in the gardens and wider outdoor spaces within the site.
This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. Duties include planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs & herbaceous plants, cutting the hedges, mowing our lawns and helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding.
You’ll also support garden volunteers and help them to make the most of their time here. You’ll be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering the many questions, or help out with gardening workshops, tours and helping set up events when needed.
