Grounds Maintenance Mechanic - Tonbridge, Kent

Reporting to                       Head of Grounds

Main Purpose                     To maintain a fully functional fleet of machinery that enable the Grounds, Gardens and      Conservation Departments to produce superb playing surfaces and lawns and gardens all       year round. 

MAIN DUTIES

  • To maintain and service Grounds, Gardens and Conservation Department machinery, identifying faults and repairing as necessary.
  • To ensure accurate records are kept with details of repairs to machinery and servicing.
  • To follow the School’s machinery service schedule.
  • To order parts when required using the purchase order system.
  • To ensure the safety and tidiness of the workshop, including benches (tools stored safely), access routes and the floor area at all times.
  • To ensure that all used machinery is cleaned down at the end of the day by users.
  • To instruct members of the Grounds Team on the proper use and setting up of machines.
  • To complete cylinder and bottom blade grinding as required.
  • To ensure that a high standard of work is maintained at all times in accordance with job requirements.
  • To work in a safe, proper and professional manner at all times ensuring that all relevant Health and Safety regulations, Risk Assessments and guidance are followed in all related areas.
  • To ensure that staff are completing checks including providing check sheets.
  • To attend any necessary training courses for professional development.
  • To fully understand and comply with the necessary overtime requirements of the job.
  • To undertake any other grounds related work as may be reasonably required by the Head of Grounds.

The successful candidate must maintain the confidentiality of information regarding the School, its staff and its business. Information must not be communicated to other persons either in or outside the School except in the recognised course of their duties.

CHILD PROTECTION

The post-holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for who he or she is responsible, or with whom he or she comes into contact will be to adhere to and always ensure compliance with the School’s Safeguarding and Child Protections Policy. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School he or she must report their concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Headmaster.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Proficient knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical systems and their components to repair and maintain equipment.
  • Experience of maintaining and servicing machinery and equipment to the approved standards of use.
  • Experience of diagnosing and repairing mechanical and hydraulic faults.
  • Experience of operating cylinder-grinders, (New Express Dual 4000 & Angle-Master 4000), welders, abrasive wheels and a 2-post lift. 
  • Experience of operating Arc and Mig welding equipment.
  • Abrasive wheel qualification. 
  • Computer literate.
  • Reliable, honest and trustworthy.
  • Full driving licence is essential.
  • Hard working, dependable and professional in approach to work.
  • Ability to work proactively and independently.
  • Self-motivated, flexible and pro-active with a willingness to work flexibly.
  • Ability to propose and implement process improvements for the Department.

HOURS OF WORK

The post is full time, all year round, 39 hours per week with flexibility to support the day to day running of the department and to fulfil the role.

Some mid-week early or late finishes may be required to cover sporting events.

Some Saturday overtime is required on a rota basis:

  • January - March: 3 x Saturdays (8.00am - 5.00pm)
  • April - July: All staff work Saturday mornings (8.00am – 12 noon); 4 x Saturdays (8.00am – 7.30pm)
  • September - December: 3 x Saturdays (8.00am to 5.30pm)

REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

An annual salary in the range £35,000 to £40,000 dependant on qualifications, skills and experience.
