Summary
We’re looking for a Building Surveyor to join us on a part time basis, two days per week for 6 month fixed term contract.
You’ll support property portfolios in Norfolk and the East of England.
You’ll be working alongside other building professionals to care for iconic properties.
What it's like to work here
You’ll be part of the Trust’s internal consultancy: a flexible resource of specialist skills and expertise. As one of a multidisciplinary team of experts, including building surveyors, curators, fundraisers and project managers, you’ll be working with others to help make things happen.
Your contractual place of work will be the nearest National Trust consultancy office to your home. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week. Expect to be out and about onsite at properties, due to the travel requirements of the role, you’ll need a driving licence and access to your own vehicle (expenses will be paid).
What you'll be doing
You’ll apply your technical excellence to support and lead projects to conserve, maintain, repair and refurbish a wide range of properties across the portfolios; working with buildings and infrastructure ranging from Grade I Listed mansions and visitor facilities, through to other structures such as follies and monuments.
You’ll bring your interest and knowledge of sustainable design principles to the projects and properties that you’re involved with, looking for solutions that respond to the implications of climate change and that contribute towards our climate action ambitions.
You’ll procure and oversee external consultants and contractors, and liaise closely with our internal specialists. Working with our property and operational teams you’ll plan and deliver conservation-focused repair and maintenance, as well as refurbishment and adaptive re-use.
You’ll also contribute towards our ongoing programme of Conservation Condition Reports and Conservation Management Reviews.

• experienced with a relevant professional qualification e.g. Chartered Surveyor MRICS, MCIOB, ARB • proficient in undertaking surveys and inspections, diagnosing building defects and specifying repair and conservation works for a range of building types, including traditional and Listed buildings • adept at preparing, coordinating, and managing planned maintenance schedules and assisting clients in phasing and the delivery of the works • skilled in construction contract administration, including the JCT suite of contracts• an effective communicator, able to build good working relationships • good at listening, building trust and giving a high-quality service to colleagues • someone with an eye for detail, good organisational skills and able to work at pace and keep to time • a champion of inclusion, who helps support everyone to feel welcome.
