Kurt - Personal Training

What made you decide on a PT course with The Training Room?

I’ve always been interested in becoming a personal trainer, so I thought I’d finally take the opportunity and do it. I chose The Training Room because of the fast-track option along with their career support as I wanted to be qualified as quickly as possible. I wanted to work in the fitness industry as soon as possible so this was the best option for me.

I’ve previously been a PE teacher and I’ve always enjoyed coaching and fitness so becoming a personal trainer was the next step for my career.

What were you doing before you started your PT course?

I worked behind a bar for a while and then spent some working as a PE teacher. I knew this wasn’t a long-term option for me and have been ready to start my career in fitness instructing and personal training.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

The course was great! My tutor made everything enjoyable and I couldn’t fault him one bit. I really enjoyed the team atmosphere and getting to train and learn with other people. It made the learning experience so much easier.

What are you doing now you've finished the course?

I’m about to start a job at énergie Fitness, where I am going to work as a self-employed personal trainer. It gives me a great opportunity to build up my client base and launch my new career; I can’t wait to start training my first clients!

What was your experience of The Training Room's career support?

The career support was great, as soon as I was contacted by the team they helped me work on my CV to get it ready for applications. The evening I completed my CV I was sent job opportunities for gyms in my area. I secured interviews with those gyms set up almost instantly too! It was such a quick and thorough experience.

I interviewed with énergie Fitness and was offered the job straight away!

From your experience, what advice would you give to anyone thinking about becoming a Personal Trainer?

If you are thinking of becoming a personal trainer and love fitness - just go for it! I would happily recommend The Training Room as a great place to start your personal training journey.

My advice for someone who is about to start a course is work hard whilst studying; the more effort you put in to studying throughout the course, the easier you will find it…and the dreaded anatomy exam won’t seem that bad!!

Simon - Personal Training

Why did you take a Personal Training course?

Over the last few years, I have really got into fitness and training - it started as a hobby while studying Construction Management at Reading University, but it developed into a passion. Shortly after graduating I travelled around the US and continued to train and developed my passion for fitness even further.

When I returned from my travels I realised I wanted to make a career out of fitness and that’s why I took a Personal Training course with The Training Room.

How were your tutors on the course?

Nick was excellent; whenever we were in workshops, he was willing to answer any question and always made sure we had the knowledge to pass our exams and succeed in our new careers. Considering the course went so quickly, it is impressive how much he taught without making it seem rushed at all.

What did you enjoy about the course?

Most of the course was great but the parts that stand out were the Level 3 Practical modules and nutrition. I already had a small grasp of the knowledge surrounding nutrition from training before the course – getting to expand on that existing knowledge was really interesting.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about becoming a Personal Trainer?

Firstly, I would say it’s imperative you get qualified. You will need to be at least Level 3 qualified (this is the benchmark if you want to offer personal training); I would definitely recommend The Training Room to anyone who’s looking to get into a fitness career.

On my course I also learnt that first impressions are key. If you’re looking fit and healthy, your clients are more likely to believe in what you’re doing. How can you trust a personal trainer if they look overweight? If you can’t get it to work for yourself, how would you expect your clients to believe it would work for them?

Michael - Personal Training

Why did you take a Personal Training course with The Training Room?

Fitness has always been a passion of mine and I’ve wanted to work in the industry for years - I’ve always thought it would be great to turn my passion for fitness into a career. I initially signed up a few years back and had to defer due to a serious illness -  when the opportunity came round again, I couldn’t wait to get started.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

I really enjoyed the CPDs, they were great! The Studio Cycling Workshop and Metabolic Circuit Training Workshop really stood out for me - I love running spin classes and circuits at my current role with Xercise4Less.

What were you doing before the course?

To be honest I feel like I’ve done a bit of everything workwise but just nothing matched my ambition or satisfied me. I would have started working as a personal trainer sooner but was set back by illness – I’m glad to be doing something I love now.

What are you doing now you've finished your course with The Training Room?

I work as a personal trainer at Xercise4Less – I run different classes there including an 8-week transformation camp, legs, bums and tums, core classes and abs classes.

What do you enjoy about your new role?

I honestly enjoy everything about it! When you work in an industry you are truly passionate about it is really rewarding. The best thing about it is seeing the results with my clients, for example we haven’t even finished any of the 8-week transformation classes yet and I am already seeing some fantastic results. It is great seeing my clients getting closer to their goals and building up their confidence week by week.

How did you find the career support?

At first, I tried applying for some gyms in my area and didn’t have much luck, so I sent my CV to my career support officer and she helped tidy it up ready to send to employers. Within a week of my CV being sent out I had lots of interest and received 4 offers straight away!

What advice would you give anyone thinking of becoming a Personal Trainer?

If fitness is something you are passionate about, do it! Don’t let the opportunity slip away…not many people enjoy their jobs or get to work in an industry they are truly passionate about.
